As I’ve been writing this series on Pretty Little Liars fashion, one thing has been constant: week after week, commenters have begged, “Do one on Aria next!”

Finally, the time has come. The truth is, I wanted to save the best for last. Sure, I love Spencer’s modern prep style, Hanna’s fem glam looks, and Emily’s tomboy-cool fashion sense, but I get most excited (and sometimes perplexed) by what Aria wears each week on the show. This post is all about her unique, edgy bohemian style.
Who is Aria Montgomery?

Aria Montgomery has just returned home after a year spent living abroad with her father, a college professor; her mother, an artist; and her adorable younger brother. Though she looks more put-together than ever and seems to have matured and become more confident while away, things are not what they seem (a common theme among all the Liars).

Aria’s family is imploding due to her father’s infidelity: Her brother is getting into trouble at school, her mom has moved out, and her relationship with her dad is strained. Meanwhile, her love life is just as complicated. Turns out the college guy she met and hooked up with in a bar bathroom over the weekend was her new English teacher come Monday morning. Oops!

Despite her good-natured instincts to do the right thing and keep those she cares about happy, trouble seems to follow Aria Montgomery. Lucky for us, she has no trouble in the wardrobe department.

Aria’s Haute Hippie Style

How to Dress Like Aria Montgomery

For Aria, experimenting with style is nothing new — it was hard to miss her Avril-esque duds and pink streaks in PLL flashbacks — but since spending a year living in Iceland, she’s returned to the small town of Rosewood with a big city aesthetic.

Her style is a sophisticated balance of luxe materials (well-worn leather, velvet and chiffon) with urban-chic accents (zippered heels, chain-handle bags, patterned knee-highs and chunky motorcycle boots). There’s always a softness to Aria’s look — she wears skirts and dresses frequently — but she also has a rebellious streak that pushes the envelope.

Here’s how you can take inspiration from Aria’s head-turning style:

Embrace the dark side. Aria wears lots of layers, different textures, and interesting patterns, but bright colors? Never. She favors the dark side; her closet is loaded with black, brown, burgundy, gray, plum and aubergine (some of which are hot colors for fall).
Dare to do the unexpected. To dress like Aria, you need a sense of adventure when it comes to clothes: Think outside the box about combinations and play around with new styles. Don’t worry about what “everyone else” is wearing; set your own trends. Want to wear sheer fishnet knee-highs? Go for it. As Aria shows us, you should dress for yourself.
Look for items with unique touches. A sequin and lace party dress with embellished chain shoulders? Aria’s been there, done that. To channel her, invest in pieces that have interesting details that set them apart from the rest. You’ll stand out in the crowd.
Embrace legwear. Tights, thigh-highs, knee socks and ankle socks are must-haves for fall and some of Aria’s favorite pieces. They keep your legs toasty (key when transitioning your summery dresses into fall) and they work with a plethora of shoes. Extend the life of your favorite strappy sandals past summer by wearing them with socks.
Mix it up. Combine different textures, fabrics, colors and patterns. Mix a cotton dress with a leather jacket, try wearing a plaid dress with a crochet shrug, or top off a silk dress with a sheer chiffon top. Those are just some examples of how Aria layers and shakes things up in her wardrobe, as seen in the above pictures.
Find your signature look. Ever notice that Aria wears skirts and leather jackets a lot? Find what you like and what flatters your body, then embrace it as a signature style in your wardrobe.
Bet on boots. Boots, the quintessential fall footwear of choice, can instantly transform an outfit. A floral sundress has a totally different look when paired with motorcycle boots, and jeans and a t-shirt get amplified when you add stiletto booties. Aria prefers tougher breeds of boots, like motorcycle and combat styles. A good compromise between utilitarian and feminine is the desert boot — the style is sure to be big this fall.

Get Aria’s ‘Pretty’ Beauty

Aria, despite being absolutely gorgeous courtesy of Mother Nature, doesn’t skimp on the makeup. She wears full eye makeup to school, always has extra-thick lashes, and plays up her plump lips with deep-toned stains and tinted balms. Aria is also blessed in the hair department: her locks are super shiny and flow in big waves. Aria is, in a word, striking.

Here are some tips and products to help you recreate Aria’s ‘Pretty’ look:

Make eyeliner your best friend. When it comes to making your eyes pop, eyeliner needs to be your go-to beauty tool. Rimming your eyes in black (or black-brown) like Aria does will instantly enhance your look. Try using a gel eyeliner for bold impact and longevity. To apply, close your eye and pull your lid taut towards your ear (gently, of course). This creates a flat surface for the liner. Begin lining at the inner corner of your eye, working your way to the outer corner. At first, stick as close to the lash line as you can. Then slowly make the line thicker for added drama. You want the line to get thicker gradually as you work toward the outer corner of your eye. When you line your lower lids, stick just to the lash line at first. Some people don’t like lining their “water line” (the wet part just above your lower lashes) but it’s a personal preference.

Bat those lashes. Aria’s eyelashes are dark, thick and sexy. Copy her look with a plumping mascara, an eyelash curler, an eyelash comb and, if you’re feeling daring, falsies. Start by curling your lashes. Then apply the mascara from the base of your lashes to the end; wiggle the wand back and forth as you go for extra volume. Finish by separating any clumps with the lash comb (typically found on the opposite end of a brow brush).

Use eye shadows in dark and matte — but natural — shades. Aria wears a lot of eyeshadow, but it never looks trampy or flashy because she uses matte and nature-based colors (like brown and gray). Take the guesswork out of shading by finding a shadow palette in coordinating tones. Then start with the medium-range color in the palette and apply shadow to your entire lid from lash line to brow bone. Next, use a crease brush in the next darkest shade or the darkest color in the palette and color along your lid crease from the outer corner to the center of the lid. Blend with your finger. Finally, use the lightest color to highlight the inner corner of your eye and just above the brow bone under your arch.

Intensify your brows. Noticed Aria’s brows? They’re fierce. To get her look, start by tweezing stray hairs while keeping your shape thick with an arch. Then fill in your brows using a brow brush or a shadow brush with short, firm bristles and an eyeshadow that matches their color.

Paint your pout. Stain your lips in a dark, rich color that flatters your complexion. Keep the finish matte, or if you need some moisture, go for a tinted balm instead of a high-shine gloss.

Rock neutral but noticeable nails. Aria’s nails are always neutral and dark — what a surprise! — but she doesn’t just stick to black. Try out dark gray, deep plum, rich burgundy, or taupe like Aria has on Pretty Little Liars.

Do a shiny ‘do with wavy ends. Aria’s hair has a luscious sheen and falls into gorgeous big waves. To emulate her look, try a thickening shampoo, a shine product, and finish by wrapping ends around a large curling iron.

Spencer Hastings, from ABC’s hit TV show Pretty Little Liars, has lots to envy — killer grades, head-turning looks, fierce athleticism, a privileged upbringing — but the girl who seemingly has it all is neither arrogant nor stuck-up about her charmed life.

She may be an overachiever who always pushes herself for excellence, but Spencer is never one to look down on others, let bullies (like former friend Ali) push people around, or forget her loyalty to her girls. She’s the kind of friend that will have your back when you’re traipsing through the woods in the middle of the night in pursuit of a possible murderer (sound familiar?) and let you raid her closet. And trust me, you’ll want to steal everything in this girl’s wardrobe.

In this post, the fourth in my series on Pretty Little Liars fashion, (In case you missed them, see my posts on Hanna’s style, Emily’s style, and the Pretty Little Liars cast style.) we’ll take a look at Spencer’s preppy style and offer up some tips so you can look as East Coast-cool as she does.

Who is Spencer Hastings?

Spencer is the youngest daughter in a prominent Rosewood family. She’s spent most of her life striving to live up to her pretentious parents’ high expectations while yearning to step out of her perfect older sister’s shadow. She’s the definition of a high school overachiever, a go-getter with a blemish-free record and Ivy League dreams. While on the surface it appears that Spencer is the prim and proper daughter every parent dreams of, the truth is she’s got some not-so-innocent indiscretions on her rap-sheet… like kissing her sister’s much older boyfriends…. not once, but twice!

How to Dress Like Spencer

Spencer’s fashion sense is preppy, but she’s not rocking pastel polos and pearls on the tennis court; her style is a modern take (with some vintage inspiration) on the classic East Coast prep look.

Spencer is known to take style cues from Annie Hall, rocking menswear-inspired ensembles. She also loves to do the unexpected, like putting a spin on ladylike lace tights by pairing them with roughed-up leather oxfords. Her use of layering, plus her color and texture choices suggest the influence of classic All-American design, like ’70s Ralph Lauren or the iconic Ali MacGraw in Love Story. Spencer always looks professional and parent-appropriate, but with a youthful edge that alludes to what’s beneath her squeaky-clean surface.

Here are some tips for infusing Spencer’s modern prepster style into your own wardrobe:

Mix up the masculinity and femininity in your closet. Try pairing a dainty printed dress with a structured menswear-inspired blazer, or match a mini and textured tights with Oxford shoes or loafers. Juxtaposing soft silhouettes against structured ones adds subtle but compelling interest to your outfit.

Stick to muted and neutral colors. Spencer’s wardrobe is full of neutral, muted, or earth tones. Her palette is perfect for fall: chocolate brown, mustard yellow, cognac, navy blue, and burgundy are some of her favorite hues.

Layer up and play with texture. Just because Spencer prefers muted hues doesn’t mean her look is dull. By layering and using different textures in her looks, Spencer adds attention-getting dimension to every outfit. So make blazers, jackets, long cardis, knee-high socks, and textured tights your best friends. Not sure how to layer and add texture? Start with a foundation, like the denim dress Spencer is wearing in the above picture. Wear knit, sweater or lace tights under the dress. Add a cardigan or jacket. Belt your waist. If you’re wearing boots, layer over-the-knee socks on top of tights.

Throw in preppy classics. Oxford button-down shirts, bows, plaid, loafers, and nautical stripes are all preppy touches seen in Spencer’s wardrobe.

When the occasion calls, go glam. Spencer’s everyday look is never flashy, but when Homecoming rolled around, she knew it was time to go glam. But even in her silver party dress and chunky necklace, she didn’t betray her style: her look was structured, yet feminine, with interesting textural fabric and jewelry that mixed pearls and chains.

Get Spencer’s ‘Pretty’ Beauty

Spencer accentuates her youthful natural beauty with an easygoing make-up routine that’s free of heavy layers and bright colors. Here are some beauty suggestions in step with Spencer’s natural, fresh look:

Flaunt flawless, mostly-bare skin. Spencer’s face always looks fresh and clean, as if some tinted moisturizer and a touch of blush is all she needs. Of course, not all of us are blessed with such perfect skin, so fake the look with a pore-refining, sheer, and/or light-reflecting foundation.

Focus on your eyes. Like most girls, Spencer lines her eyes and plumps up her lashes with mascara, but the rest of her look is minimal. Keeping the rest of your facial makeup simple offers an opportunity to play up your eyes; they’ll pop more against a barely-there canvas.

Try matte lips and nails in rich, dark colors. When Spencer does wear lipstick — like to Homecoming or to the country club to visit Alex — she favors deep, matte burgundy hues that play up her warm skin and dark hair. She’s also been seen sporting nails in the same dark crimson. So try this yourself – look for a rich color for fall that flatters your complexion.

Let your waves fall down. If you’re blessed with naturally wavy hair like Spencer, let your wavy locks flow! Try a serum or mousse made for waves post-shower, comb through your damp hair, and let it dry naturally. If your hair’s straight, try wrapping sections around a curling iron (without using the clamp) to achieve the same look.

Hanna is quickly becoming my favorite character on Pretty Little Liars, and not just because of her killer (pardon the pun) style; the girl really has a heart of gold. She may be a Queen Bee, but in recent episodes, as she has faced enough troubles — family, friends, love, money, self-esteem — to make the average girl ditch the perfect curls and fall into a fashion rut. In addition, Hanna has shown a heartfelt and selfless side that Regina George never could… all while looking picture-perfect.

This post, the third in my series on Pretty Little Liars fashion, is all about how you can achieve Hanna’s trendy, feminine and glamorous style:

Who is Hanna Marin?

When we first met Hanna Marin, she was strutting down the hallways of Rosewood High like she owned the place… that is, when she wasn’t shoplifting from ritzy department stores. Not exactly the best start for the fab four’s sole blonde. But there’s more to Hanna’s story than just that of a poor little rich girl who rules the school.

Before Alison’s disappearance, Hanna was “Hefty Hanna,” an insecure and overweight outsider who longed to be the popular girl. Fast-forward to a year after Alison’s disappearance and Hanna has reinvented herself: She’s lost the extra weight, become besties with fellow outcast-turned-It-girl Mona, swapped sweats for designer duds and snagged the boyfriend of her dreams.

But, of course, nothing’s as perfect as it seems. Her parents’ divorce left a strain on her household, particularly in the financial department. While her mother begs for mortgage extensions and can barely afford to keep the fridge stocked, Hanna struggles to keep up the illusion of perfection she’s worked so hard to create. As she barters her designer bags for cash, forms a flirty bond with the school nerd and spends less time with her best friend Mona, Hanna begins to feel her It-girl status slipping away… The question is whether she still cares.

How to Dress Like Hanna

Each of the Pretty Little Liars has a unique style… Aria dresses edgy bohemian, Spencer’s the prep and Emily prefers a sporty look, but what about Hanna?

Her style is trickier to pinpoint because her ensembles are eclectic. She borrows elements of everyone’s wardrobe to create looks that are strikingly chic with a touch of trend, femininity and glamor. Hanna looks like she’s heading to a hip soiree everyday rather than just trekking to class. Her look is very young Hollywood: It’s flirty and girly with a trendy edge.

Here are some tips for getting Hanna’s eclectic aesthetic for yourself:

The hallway is a runway. In Hanna’s world, there’s no such thing as dressing down. School — despite what moms usually say about it “not being a fashion show” — is her place to shine, and she wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to show off her style regardless of impracticality or discomfort. To dress like Hanna, you have to approach dressing for everyday activities as an exciting chance to create something to be seen and make yourself stand out.

Balance girly frills with pieces borrowed from the boys. Hanna frequently mixes contrasting styles in one ensemble, pairing flirty dresses and ruffled tops with menswear-inspired structured blazers. To do this yourself, try putting a fitted jacket or boyfriend blazer over your favorite frilly dress.

Go blue. (Or find your signature hue.) Hanna wears so much blue! Sometimes her entire outfit is composed of blue garments, but it never looks dull because she’s knows how to work the monotone look. The trick? Mix up the shades! You can wear an outfit in all one color if you wear items in different shades of the hue. Just pick a color you love that flatters your skin and hair.

Define your waist. Hanna utilizes belts to define her natural waist, particularly when she’s wearing lots of layers. Wear a skinny belt over a blazer or buckle a thick one over your favorite fit-n-flare dress.

Enhance your outfit with eye-catching jewelry. Unlike Emily, Hanna doesn’t go minimal on the jewelry front: You’ll often seeing her layering long necklaces, reading texts from A with big cocktail rings on her fingers, or sporting big gold hoops in her ears.

Look luxe without spending big bucks. Hanna was accustomed to shopping at the pricey stores and wearing the hippest designer labels but now, like us college students, she finds herself adjusting to life in a “one paycheck family.” Fortunately, budget shopping doesn’t mean you have to let go of looking luxurious. Seek out designer collaboration lines at inexpensive retailers (like the Go International collections at Target, I Heart Ronson and Olsenboye at JCPenney or Vera Wang and Lauren Conrad’s collections for Kohl’s) and don’t settle for fabrics that look cheaply made or shabby. Splurge on wardrobe investments like a nice coat, a pair of jeans that fit like a dream or a versatile leather bag.

Be put-together, polished and poised. If you want to steal Hanna’s style, you’ve got to master looking perfectly polished. On any given day, whether she’s just doing homework in her kitchen or scouting out A in the woods, Hanna looks put-together and walks with poise.

Following my last post on Emily’s style, several of you asked for more on the girls’ beauty looks, so here are some tips and product suggestions to help you achieve Hanna’s Pretty look:

Pick shades to complement your eye color: Hanna’s eyeshadow for day always intensifies her stunning blue eyes. Make your own eyes pop by picking hues that complement their color. Products like Intense i-Color from Almay offer packages of shadows based on eye color so you get the perfect shades to enhance your brown, green, blue or hazel sparklers.

Rim and highlight your eyes: Hanna always lines her eyes and uses shadow with a hint of shimmer to make her baby blues sparkle. Apply a highlighter (shimmery shadow or cream) at the inner corners of your eyes and at the brow bone under your brow’s arch.

Naturally pink pout: A sheer gloss in a subtle pink or natural tone is all Hanna needs for her perfect pout.

Perfect curls: Perfect ringlet curls with a middle part are Hanna’s signature hair look. Up until the summer finale, she’d never worn her hair straight in an episode. So use a 1 inch barrel curling iron all over to get the Hanna aesthetic.

Trendy nail colors: Have fun with your nails and paint on trendy colors like those Hanna prefers. Not one to be bland, she always rocks bold shades like near-black or vibrant fuchsia.

Following my post on fashion inspired by the new ABC Family show Pretty Little Liars, many CF readers called for a series of posts focused on each character’s style in more detail — your requests have been answered! Each week, I’ll do a new article featuring one of the four lead characters — Emily, Aria, Hanna and Spencer — and detail how you can achieve the girl’s look. I’m kicking off the series with Emily…

(Please note this series is not about the books but the TV show! I’ve heard the two differ and I don’t want to upset any loyalists to the book series!)

Who is Emily Fields?

Emily is arguably the most mysterious of the four leading ladies — if the last episodes were any indication, there’s a lot of angst and baggage lurking beneath her quiet, good-girl surface.

Raised in a military family, Emily is the ideal daughter: a sweet and obedient girl-next-door type with good grades and athletic talent. But her strict upbringing stifles her personal growth — fear of her parents disapproval and community backlash makes it difficult for her to explore her sexual orientation and be honest with her friends.

Though Emily may be the one harboring the most secrets and uncertainties, her style is the least complex: Of all the Pretty Little Liars, Emily’s aesthetic is the most pared down and accessible.

How to Dress Like Emily

Emily prefers simple clothes, but her style is anything but boring. Classic silhouettes and clean lines matched with bright colors and layering keeps her tomboy look fresh and lively. Closet staples like denim minis, chino shorts, distressed jeans, hoodies and t-shirts are the foundation of her wardrobe, but she sports them in exuberant hues with dainty accessories to keep the sporty look feminine.

Think comfortable and active. Emily’s clothes are casual and reflect her active lifestyle — athletic-inspired minis, cargo pants, sweatshirts — but her clothes always have a unique touch to make them feel modern, particularly the use of eye-catching color. To channel Emily, choose items that are classic with a twist.

Mind your proportions. Emily wears slouchy off-the-shoulder sweatshirts and boyfriend-esque cardigans, but the proportions of her outfits are always balanced and flattering. Be mindful of your ensemble’s proportions so you don’t look frumpy. Wear a loose-fitting tee with a slim mini or skinny jeans, or layer a tight v-neck or tank under your oversized cardy.

Pare down the jewelry. Emily is not the girl on the show sporting a shoulder-grazing feather earring. (Can you guess who that was?) Her jewelry is often dainty and simple, yet feminine: simple silver hoops or a few thin, layered necklaces are more her taste.

Pick sporty shoes and accessories. Emily almost always wears stylish sneakers and carries utilitarian-inspired bags like her everyday cargo tote.

Stay fresh-faced and relaxed. Emily is gorgeous but she doesn’t wear a lot of make-up. To get her look, let your natural beauty shine through by forgoing the caked-on layers. Brush on some bronzer for a healthy glow and add a pop of blush on the apples of your cheeks for a natural flush. Let your hair flow down or put it up in a pony — Emily switches between the two easy hairstyles.

We continue our Hunger Games excitement and we are back for our 2nd installment!! Let’s jump right in…

The Girl Who Was On Fire

Once the tributes arrive at the Capitol, they are assigned stylists and given head-to-toe makeovers before being presented on nationwide television. The better a tribute looks on camera, the higher his or her chances of sponsorship. Katniss’s stylist is Cinna, a soft-spoken and surprisingly compassionate design genius.

During the opening ceremony, Katniss and Peeta must represent the coal-mining industry of District 12; they are dressed in black unitards that burst into synthetic flame as they are paraded through the city. For the televised interview with Caesar Flickerman, Katniss wears a shimmering gown that gives off the impression that she’s engulfed in flames.

Product Information: Jacket, Dress, Shoes, Ring, Earrings, Gold Polish, Red Polish, Eyeshadow, Shimmer Powder

When Katniss first sees herself after Cinna and his team work their magic, she remarks: “I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun.” You can capture Katniss’s fiery look with an outfit that contains elements from both the opening ceremony costume and the interview gown. The snake-print jacket is surprisingly similar to the coal unitard; this draped one-shoulder frock is just as pretty but slightly less formal than Katniss’s floor-length dress.

Onyx earrings evoke the coal of District 12 and a burnished ring adds even more fire details to the outfit. A pair of metallic heels adds another hit of sparkle. Layer gold glitter polish over a red basecoat for a flame-like nail design. Apply bronze eyeshadow for dramatic eyes, then finish it all off with a mist of golden body powder. The Capitol crowd will go wild!

Training for the Arena

Before they are sent into the arena, tributes attend training sessions not only to prepare themselves for the Games but also to give Capitol viewers ideas on whom they should be placing their bets and corporate sponsorships. After the training period, each tribute meets privately with the Gamemakers to show off their skills. A good score typically ensures support from the Capitol.

After her temper flares up, Katniss’s session with the Gamemakers doesn’t go quite as she planned. To her surprise, she earns an unprecedented high score.

Product Information: Jacket, Hoodie, Shirt, Leggings, Sneakers, Boots, Bracelet, Earrings

Super dorky confession: When I’m at the gym, I push myself to work harder by pretending that I’m a tribute preparing for the Games. (Silly as it sounds, I swear it works!) Plus, if you look cute during a workout, you’re more likely to stay motivated! With that in mind, this sleek outfit, inspired by the training uniform, is perfect for hitting the gym.

Pair a wine-colored shirt with cool shoulder cutouts with a sleeveless hoodie and a streamlined athletic jacket. Smaller jewelry, like this arrow bracelet and apple earrings, won’t get in the way of your workout. (Plus, they reference a certain stunt that Katniss pulls off during her session with the Gamemakers!) This outfit is polished enough to wear to class; just swap in black jeans and buckled ankle boots for the leggings and sneakers.

Let the 74th Annual Hunger Games Begin!

The Gamemakers’ job is to create an arena full of vicious challenges designed to pit the tributes against one another. After all, the more bloodshed and gore, the greater the entertainment for the Capitol. Watching the tributes slowly die of starvation or cold is no fun for these sadistic viewers, so the tributes are given uniforms conducive to wilderness survival.

The book describes the outfit as “simple tawny pants, light green blouse, sturdy brown belt, and thin, hooded black jacket”; the movie version is almost the same, but with a black shirt and green pants.

Product Information: Anorak, Shirt, Vest, Pants, Boots, Ring, Necklace, Backpack

In the arena, everyone is dressed in the same uniform. Nevertheless, you’ll stand out in this outfit inspired by the tributes’ apparel. The black anorak will protect you against the elements, while a burgundy vest, which matches the lining of the jackets, will provide additional warmth. Hiking boots with a wedge look rugged without sacrificing style.

For good luck, put on a bronze bird ring to represent the mockingjay pin that Katniss wears into the arena. The delicate arrow necklace references the archery skills that keep her alive. While Katniss totes around precious food, water, and weapons in her orange backpack, you can carry your school essentials in this cute canvas one. As a final touch, plait your hair into Katniss’s signature braid. (Here’s a great video tutorial.)

Bonus look: Inspired by Safe And Sound

I’ll admit I was skeptical when I first heard that country-pop princess Taylor Swift would be featured on the movie soundtrack, but once I watched the Safe and Sound video, my doubts totally dissipated. The song, which also features folk duo The Civil Wars, is ethereal and haunting, and the music video, filmed in a cemetery and forest in Tennessee, definitely captures the spirit of The Hunger Games.

Product information: Blouse, Skirt, Scarf, Shoes, Earrings, Ring, Hairpins, Necklace, Lip balm

In the music video, Taylor wears a one-of-a-kind 1920s vintage gown, but you can emulate the romantic look with an ivory cap-sleeved blouse and pleated midi skirt. Neutral oxfords and a muted floral scarf add to the outfit’s old-fashioned appeal. Accessorize with delicate jewelry: Bird earrings, twig hairpins, and a deer necklace evoke the mist-enshrouded forest, while a morbid but pretty bone ring references the cemetery setting.

Taylor’s relatively makeup-free look in the video was a surprising but welcome departure from her usual cat-eye liner and bold lipstick. Skip the heavy foundation and dab on some lip salve from a vintage-inspired tin for a pretty, au naturel visage. Let your hair air-dry for a wavy texture; if you’ve got straight hair, spritz in some wave spray or texturizer.

By now, you’ve probably heard the buzz surrounding Suzanne Collins’s popular young adult trilogy The Hunger Games. With the first movie adaptation came out in a few weeks ago (March 23rd!), it’s prime time for a Geek Chic post about fashion inspired by Panem! We will be splitting our fashion inspiration in a couple of posts because there’s so much to see!! Enjoy

The Hunger Games is an addictive blend of dystopian horror novel, action thriller, makeover show, star-crossed romance, and Project Runway. For a YA book, it’s surprisingly heavy stuff, with a ton of graphic violence and implied social commentary. The movie adaptation stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth as romantic triangle members Katniss, Peeta, and Gale.

The books deliver more than just a gripping, thought-provoking story: Not since The Little House on the Prairie has a series contained quite so many descriptions of food and fashion. Ever since I first read The Hunger Games books over a year ago, I’ve been absolutely dying to see how Collins’ incredibly detailed imagery will be interpreted onscreen. As a staunch book-to-movie-accuracy advocate, I’m hoping the costumes will be as close to her descriptions as possible. (Still upset about Hermione’s Yule Ball robes — they were supposed to be periwinkle, not pink!)

Know Your Geek: About The Hunger Games

The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where North America, now called Panem, has been divided into the Capitol, located somewhere near the rocky mountains, and twelve outlying districts.

To keep the population from rebelling, the Capitol dictatorship holds an annual event called the Hunger Games, in which two tributes, one girl and one boy from ages 12-18, are randomly chosen from each district. These tributes must fight in a specially crafted arena until only one remains; every moment of the games is televised to serve as a reminder to the residents of Panem that the Capitol controls them and their children. More horrifyingly, the Games have evolved into a sadistic form of entertainment for the Capitol.

Katniss Everdeen, the 16-year-old protagonist, volunteers as tribute when her 12-year-old sister Prim is chosen to go the Games. With her anger at the unjust system and a fierce determination to beat the odds, she unwittingly sets in motion an avalanche of rebellion.

Suzanne Collins was inspired to write the books while channel-surfing: On one channel was graphic footage of the Iraq War; on another was a reality makeover program. This jarring juxtaposition, along with the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, sparked the creation of The Hunger Games.

The sequels, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, explore the consequences of rebellion against a totalitarian government

Outfits Inspired by The Hunger Games

Whether you’re seeking a show-stopping midnight premiere ensemble or an everyday outfit for attending lectures, you’ll find it in these looks inspired by Katniss’s journey. Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

District 12

Katniss grows up in District 12, the smallest and poorest district, which is responsible for coal mining. She and her friend Gale Hawthorne must hunt illegally in the nearby woods to obtain enough food to feed their starving families. Although Peeta Mellark, the baker’s son, lives in a more affluent area of town, he doesn’t live a life of luxury either. For the most part, the people of District 12 are resilient and loyal to one another.

After her father’s death in the coal mines, Katniss becomes the sole breadwinner in the Everdeen family due to her mother’s extreme depression. Katniss does everything she can to ensure the safety of her mother and her kind-hearted younger sister, Primrose.

Product Information: Jacket, Shirt, Henley, Vest, Jeans, Boots, Earrings, Necklace

Although you probably won’t be hunting or evading Capitol Peacekeepers anytime soon, you can channel Katniss’s rugged spirit with a utilitarian parka and gray jeans. Layer a cargo shirt over a brown thermal henley; for extra warmth, slip on a cozy knitted vest.

Accessorize with lace-up, knee-high boots for some of that District 12 toughness and add bow and arrow earrings to represent Katniss’s archery skills. Finally, a squirrel pendant references the woodland prey that keeps Katniss’s family alive.

The Reaping

Compared to other districts, 12 doesn’t have the best track record in the Hunger Games. Haymitch Abernathy, a surly drunk, is the only living victor from 12. Since it essentially spells certain death for two of the district’s children, nobody’s particularly thrilled to attend the reaping. Nevertheless, the townspeople must put on a good show for the Capitol broadcasters, so they all wear their best clothing to the ceremony, which is hosted yearly by Effie Trinket, the Capitol escort for District 12.

Older children have a higher probability of being chosen, since more entries are garnered with each year of age; poorer children are also at a disadvantage because food rations can be exchanged for additional entries.

Muted grays and blues dominate the District 12 reaping apparel. A pleated blouse and chambray skirt are a simple but pretty combination; a woven leather belt, gray tights and Mary Jane flats add to the feminine look.

Though only Effie Trinket actually enjoys the reaping, you can inject some fun into the outfit with your accessories: The bracelet recalls Prim’s pet goat, Lady, who also provides a minor source of income to the Everdeen family. Carry your belongings in a tooled leather bag emblazoned with a soaring bird. (We’ll say it’s a mockingjay.) Finally, for those of you who have read the books, the cute duck earrings reference the moment when Katniss decides to volunteer in the place of her sister.

Denizens of the Capitol

The wealthiest and most powerful citizens of Panem reside in the Capitol. In stark contrast to the impoverished districts, the Capitol is a veritable hive of debauchery, gluttony, and materialism. To Katniss, the Capitol citizens’ behaviors and appearances are equally outlandish.

Capitol citizens gorge themselves on rich foods and then take vomiting pills so they can feast again. In the name of fashion, Capitol residents do everything from implanting jewels in their faces to covering their bodies in ornate tattoos to dying their skin. Effie Trinket and Caesar Flickerman, the television interviewer for the Games, are perfect examples of the ostentatious styles that dominate the Capitol.

While you certainly don’t have to go to the extremes that they do, Capitol-inspired outfits will definitely speak to you if you’re a glitz and glamor kind of girl. Effie Trinket’s attire is all about making a statement with volume and color, so this frilly turquoise dress definitely fits the bill. Hot pink is a great complement to teal, so slip on a towering pair of strappy platforms and swipe on bold lipstick in that shade.

If you’re still feeling the aftereffects of Kate Middleton mania, this is the perfect time to try out a fascinator. (Effie would love this feathered confection!) Add even more pizzazz with gleaming bangles and a metallic belt. Finally, tuck a purple clutch under your arm and apply a smoky eye in a similar hue.

If the overall look is too over-the-top for your taste, swap out one or two of the statement pieces for neutral-toned items.

Come back next week for the rest!!

Theyskens’ Theory Spring 2012 RTW | ELLE

Has anyone else noticed that the weather has been SO unpredictable lately? I mean, one day it will be warm enough to go sans-jacket, then two days later I’ll be pulling on my heavy duty winter coat. That’s why I’m glad I discovered the Theyskens’ Theory Spring 2012 collection — their use of textures, fabrics and layering is brimming with inspiration for that tricky transition time from winter to spring.

However, since buying clothes straight off the runway would definitely be pricey, I’ve put together three budget-friendly interpretations of looks from this collection. Keep on scrolling to check them out!

1. Denim & Metallics

Photo: ELLE

This look is a prime example of what I meant about playing with textures — from the metallic blazer to the waxed jeans, this outfit elevates basic wardrobe staples to a whole new level.

Product Info: Jacket- H&M, Ring- Nasty Gal, Shirt- Ruche, Sweater- Old Navy, Jeans- Mango, Shoes- Endless

For this outfit, start by layering a chambray button-up with a gray open-weave sweater — make it so only the collar and cuffs peek out of the sweater. Add some super-trendy waxed jeans (If they aren’t your style, just swap ‘em out for your favorite pair of regular jeans!) and a sleek silver blazer. Then finish this look with some lace-up pumps and an edgy ring for a casual, yet stylish look.

2. Pattern Play

Photo: ELLE

This look uses mixed prints and creative layering to create a chic, laid-back outfit that’s perfect for transitional weather — depending on the temperature, just add or subtract layers!

Product Info: Blazer- Old Navy, Tee- J. Crew, Shirt- Forever 21, Earrings- Kate Spade, Loafers- Target, Shorts- MNG by Mango, Necklace- French Connection

Mimic this look by pairing some floral print shorts with a basic white t-shirt. Add a blouse in a contrasting print (leave the buttons open) then layer on a fun denim blazer. A pair of loafers keeps the look casual, while a layered necklace and stud earrings add a stylish finishing touch.

3. Tomboy Glam

Photo: ELLE

All of the looks from Theyskens’ Theory have a bit of a masculine vibe, but I especially liked how this one mixed a slouchy tee and jeans with a fitted tweed jacket, which dresses up the outfit and adds a dose of femininity.

Snag this look for yourself by pairing some slouchy boyfriend jeans with a silver lamé tank, then add a gray tweed blazer. A pair of embellished flats and a structured bag add polish while the feathered earrings are a chic touch. This outfit would be perfect for class or even going out to lunch with the girls.
